How to Make Earth Day a Year-Round Commitment

From its humble beginnings in 1970, Earth Day has evolved into much more than just a single day of awareness. What started as a one-day teach-in has blossomed into a globally recognized event, now celebrated over an entire month, with individuals and companies alike committing to sustainability all year round. With so much to celebrate and so many reasons to be inspired, it's no wonder that Earth Day became a month filled with passion for the planet.

Kicking Off the Month of April

We kicked off our Earth Month celebration at the SoCal Women+ In Green Breakfast, where environmental leaders and change-makers came together to share insights and inspire action. It was an incredible start to what promises to be a month of meaningful events and initiatives aimed at honoring and protecting the Earth.

How WNC Celebrates Sustainability Year-Round

At WNC, the values celebrated on Earth Day serve as an ongoing commitment that we live out every single day. Here are just a few ways we actively work toward a greener, more sustainable future:

1% For the Planet Membership: We’ve made a commitment to give back to the Earth by joining 1% for the Planet, a global movement that channels resources toward environmental nonprofits working to protect the planet.  

Certified California Green Business: We are proud to be a certified Green Business at the Innovator Tier in Carlsbad, CA: the first city in San Diego County to join the California Green Business Network (CAGBN). This certification reflects our dedication to maintaining sustainable practices within our operations and inspiring other local businesses to do the same.  

Active Memberships in Environmental Organizations: Being members of the California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA), the U.S. Green Building Council California (USGBC-CA), San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, and with two TRUE Advisors on staff, WNC is at the forefront of driving zero-waste and sustainable practices across the industry.  

Beyond Waste Audits: Going Further for the Planet

We’re proud of the hands-on work we do—like conducting waste audits and promoting sustainable business practices—but there’s always more to be done. As anyone who’s passionate about protecting the Earth knows, there’s no such thing as “finished”. There is always more to learn, more to give, and more ways to reduce our impact individually and collectively.

For us, using less and wasting less is a way of giving back to the Earth every single day.
