Whether it’s retired furniture, electronics, or supplies no longer needed— keeping useful items out of landfills is simple and provides many benefits.
Environmental: Keeping items that still work or can be reused in circulation reduces landfill space consumption, reduces the need for new manufacturing, reduces packaging and emissions associated with shipping and handling, lowers carbon footprint, and benefits diversion goals.
Social: Donated office supplies, furniture, and working electronics can support nonprofits, schools, job-training programs and underserved populations.
Financial: Many nonprofits provide tax‐deductible receipts for in-kind donations, helping companies offset tax liability while doing good.
In short: think of the opportunity to “do good” rather than just “get rid.” When items are still functional, donating is a win-win and promotes sustainability at the office.
Read on to learn how, where, and what to donate.
Step by Step Sustainable Office Clean Out
Consider these steps to maintain a smooth process with maximum benefits:
Inventory & sort: List all items (e.g., desks, chairs, filing cabinets, monitors, laptops, office supplies) and group them by condition. Some donors will accept “fair condition,” others only “good/gently used.” Items that are not in usable condition should be set aside and disposed of responsibly.
Take photos: Document the condition of items before donating (especially electronics/furniture) for your records and tax deduction support.
Data security: Remove or wipe any sensitive data from electronics. Some donation programs or electronics recyclers handle data wiping.
Choose the right organization: Different nonprofits have different needs and capacity. Some accept furniture, some only small items; some pick up, some require drop-off, and others require pre-scheduled pickups for large items.
Document your donation: Get a receipt with a description of the items and estimated value for tax-deduction purposes.
Communicate internally: If this is a business clean-out, let employees know the plan, invite them to contribute or suggest nonprofits.
Multiply your impact: Consider including neighboring businesses or even connect with your property manager to organize a building-wide donation drive that supports eco friendly office practices.
Follow up & publicize: Sharing the results (e.g., “We diverted 2 tons of furniture from landfill”) reinforces a positive culture around reuse and sustainability.

Donation Resources by County
Below are some resources in Southern California that accept office-related donations (supplies, furniture, electronics). We recommend checking each organization’s website or calling ahead, as acceptance criteria and pickup options may change. Some items may be more suited for donation to local community centers, schools, or even neighboring businesses or residents.
San Diego County
Goodwill Industries of San Diego County – Accepts surplus inventory, electronics, donation drives: “the sale or recycling of these items will help our programs… your items will support Goodwill’s mission … your donation won’t end up in a landfill.” (sdgoodwill.org)

Tips by Material and Item Type
Furniture: Desks, cubicles, chairs, filing cabinets. Many donation centers will accept these if they are intact and in usable condition (no broken wheels, missing parts, heavy stains). Larger furniture may require pickup service or dismantling.
Electronics: Computers, monitors, printers, tablets, phones. Make sure to wipe data and restore to factory settings; choose an organization that does certified data wiping if needed.
Office supplies: Stationery, binders, folders, surplus paper, desk organizers. These are especially useful for nonprofits, schools, and community centers.
Breakroom/kitchen items: Think microwaves, refrigerators, small tools/appliances, tables, chairs, waste bins, and even nonperishable foods and cleaning products.
Unique items: Tiles, samples, lighting, plants, and other miscellaneous unique items can be posted for free or low cost and claimed quickly on neighborhood apps such as Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Nextdoor, and Buy Nothing groups.
Broken or obsolete items: Research any manufacturer refurbishment or recycling programs that may exist. Returning items to a manufacturer supports a circular economy.
Avoid landfill by default: For any items that cannot be donated, especially electronic or bulky, arrange a special vendor pick up, rather than just trashing. Your waste company may skip containers that contain bulky or potentially hazardous items like e-waste.
Office clean-outs don’t have to mean “empty everything and dump it.” Instead, they can be an opportunity to give items new life, support worthy causes, and reduce waste.
